To kick off the end of the year celebration, I’m putting the e-book version of my book on super sale. For the rest of Kwanzaa 2013 you can download the e-book for $4.99. The price jumps back to normal on January 2, 2014. According to some people, the book is pretty good (smile). These folks over here said the same thing.

Looking Back While Preparing for the Future

Personally, 2013 was a really powerful year. In addition to welcoming our daughter into the world, our son started first grade and my family took some serious steps towards creating the reality that we want to have.

Producing this website and publishing my first book, Afro State of Mind: Memories of a Nappy Headed Black Girl, were big parts of that.

The book was my way of contributing to the broader conversation about Black hair and skin color while exploring the realities of race and how the history of racism impacts Black women’s self esteem and concepts of beauty today.

This website was an extension of that conversation. I wanted to create a space where I could use topics like Black hair and colorism to have smart and sassy conversations about race, politics, culture and identity. A lot of people told me this was impossible but I decided to do it anyway. Once we launched I discovered that you all are some of the greatest supporters out there. I am so grateful for all of your emails, comments and love shout outs. I can’t tell you how good it feels when the articles I post here are shared, liked, plus one’d, retweeted and debated.

I’m very much looking forward to continuing that upward trajectory in 2014. My goal is to bring you even more articles, videos, and podcasts that dive into the nuances of race, politics, identity and culture. And of course Black hair!

Beauty Boss Karen Tappin, CEO of Karen’s Body Beautiful said Afro State of Mind: Memories of a Nappy Headed Black Girl is:

“The best book I’ve ever read because it speaks to me as a Black woman! Lurie’s story is engaging, brutally honest, informative, entertaining and very well written.  It is one of those books that you highlight and go back to reread parts of it again because it explains why you do what you do in ways you didn’t even understand.”

Well thank you Karen (you know they call her the Beauty Boss for a reason!)!
